What we do
Most of the work here is cataract surgery, glaucoma, and injections into the eye for retinal conditions. We also see the everyday eye problems: dry eye, allergy, diabetic eye disease and eye injuries, and children's eyes.
Cataract surgery
A cataract is the clouding of the lens inside your eye. Surgery replaces the cloudy lens with a clear one.

Dr Patel performs viscocanalostomy, a form of glaucoma surgery that opens the eye's own drainage channel without cutting a full-thickness hole through the wall of the eye. Because there is no hole, there is no bleb — the small blister of fluid that sits under the eyelid after the more common operation, and that causes much of the trouble afterwards.
It is a demanding operation and few surgeons in South Africa offer it. The technique was developed in South Africa by Professor Robert Stegmann. Dr Patel continues to develop the procedure and teaches it to other surgeons in South Africa and abroad.
About Dr Patel
Dr Jeshal Patel qualified MBChB and holds the Fellowship of the College of Ophthalmologists of South Africa, FC Ophth (SA). He trained at Dr George Mukhari Hospital and has worked at St John Eye Hospital at Chris Hani Baragwanath.
He opened the practice in Brits in 2010 and works from Mediclinic Brits. Consultations are in English and Afrikaans.
Am I seeing the right person?
An optometrist tests your sight and prescribes glasses and contact lenses. An ophthalmologist is a doctor who has done medical school and then further years of training in the eye, and who can prescribe medicine and operate.
Many patients see both. Your optometrist will send you here if you need medical or surgical treatment.
